CHILD SEXUAL ANTICS

In a private school in Caracas, two female teenagers kissed each other on the mouth. The institution did not allow them to register for the new school term.  It is easy to suppose that the argument was that the “exemplary punishment ensures that events like this one are not repeated.”

But one wonders: Is marking these girls with such a precedent and sanction, an act of pedagogy? I know the school and its policies because I studied there; so I am inclined to believe that rather than taking into consideration the health of adolescents, what is being protected is the business. I think that by setting such drastic limits, the children were not considered.

The reactions in the networks, for and against the measure were not long in coming. I am a long way from participating in what I perceive as a kind of acceptance feast for how much sexual behavior may appear out there, let alone the “idea” that the non-satisfaction of any whim will traumatize a person.

I believe, quite the contrary, that teenagers need limits, in this as in any other subject, and perhaps in this case in a special way. It is up to us adults to set an example. When we do not, when we do not imagine the effect, on the psyche of children, of some of the sexual freedoms that we either allow ourselves or are promoted through the media in front of children; in these cases, the sexual and emotional education of children is not being prioritized.

In the school where my grandchildren studied (Simón Bolívar University Educational Unit, Caracas), on one occasion some prepubescent children, of both sexes, kissed each other on the mouth, wanting to know what that was like. The school’s response seemed very appropriate:  they did not underestimate the incident as “boys’ affairs”, nor did they disqualify or expel anyone.

The matter had to be stopped, yes, but with guidance, using the incident as an opportunity to give appropriate sexual orientation. Neither the sexuality of the boys and girls was mistreated, nor was it left unattended. I myself collaborated with some talks.

Without stridency, in a gentle, intelligent, kind manner, the children were supported to overcome a stage, while the school managed to set the necessary limits. Of course, the matter did not appear in the media! Preventive behavior is like this: silent, effective and does not gain press. This time we thought of the children!
